Countdown to War

Austria refuses Russian request for extension of time-limit.

Germany thinks crisis could be localised, but inclined to fall in with idea of mediation.

Serbia orders mobilisation; order signed by Crown Prince at 3 p.m.

Russia conciliatory, but arranges for mobilisation of 13 corps on Russo-Austrian frontier if latter brings armed pressure to bear on Serbia.

Serbian Government leaves for Nish.  Hands in most conciliatory and almost humiliating answer 5.58 p.m.  Austrian Minister at Belgrade leaves for Vienna at 6.30 p.m.  Serbian General Putnik (Chief of Staff) arrested near Budapest.
