Erich Ludendorff's wartime career was turbulent.
On 20 July 1914 France's President Poincare embarked on a state visit to Russia. Poincare's visit to Russia - intended to cement France's military ties with Russia - came at the height of the July Crisis. Indeed, it was as Poincare was en route for home from Russia that Austria-Hungary's ultimatum to Serbia was issued.
