The Western Front Today - Bernafay Wood Cemetery
Bernafay Wood cemetery, on the Somme battlefields (and nearby Longueval Road cemetery), sits within an area seized by the 9th (Scottish) Division on 3-4 July 1916 as part of the Somme Offensive. Once in British hands a dressing station was established on the site of the cemetery.
The area fell once more into German hands during the offensive of Spring 1918 but was recaptured by the British 18th Division on 27 August 1918.
The cemetery contains 793 U.K., 122 Australian, 4 South African, 2 New Zealand and 1 Indian burials. Also contained within the cemetery are 32 special memorials.
