Vintage Audio - If You Were The Only Girl In The World

Music hall comedian George Robey Click to download as MP3

Reproduced below are the lyrics to the enduringly popular song If You Were The Only Girl In The World.

Written in 1916 by Clifford Grey (music) and Nat D. Ayer (lyrics) it was taken from a hit musical from the same year, The Bing Boys Are Here (which was followed the next year by The Bing Boys Are There and by The Bing Boys On Broadway in 1918).

A sentimental favourite the song has been performed by many artists over the years, including Perry Como.  Available in the player above is a version performed by Violet Lorraine and George Robey in 1916.

If You Were The Only Girl In The World

Sometimes when I feel low
and things look blue
I wish a boy I had... say one like you.
Someone within my heart to build a throne
Someone who'd never part, to call my own

If you were the only girl in the world
and I were the only boy
Nothing else would matter in the world today
We could go on loving in the same old way

A garden of Eden just made for two
With nothing to mar our joy
I would say such wonderful things to you
There would be such wonderful things to do
If you were the only girl in the world
and I were the only boy.

"Lance corporal bacon" was the name used by Anzac soldiers to describe very fatty bacon with a sliver of lean meat running through it.
